My Years with Lucien

Lucien Stark will always be a major part of my life. I met him when I was a young 13 year old pianist having just moved to Nashville and studying with Enid Katahn. He and his wife were frequent visitors in our home. When I went to Peabody College to continue my studies with Mrs. Katahn she went on sabbaticle for a year and Lucien kindly taught me. His famous softspoken, detailed teaching, and inner patience and perseverance was tested as he dealt with my headstrong, opinionated, and exaggerated personality. He established a world class summer program at Peabody that has never been equaled anywhere. He brought in world famous artists from all over the world to perform and give Master Classes and included the faculty at both Blair, which was a pre-college prigram at the time, and Peabody to do the same. Those of us who were priveledged to have attended those years it was in exisitence will forever be grateful to those influences as it propelled us to a world of beauty and knowledge. It gave me a level to aspire to. After becoming established in Cincinnati, my husband and I invited Lucien to perform in our home the Goldberg Variations of J.S. Bach. It was memorable. I always loved Lucien and will always remember him as a gentle, dedicated, and loving man,who gave to all his students a sense of the music and a piece of himself.
