Memories of Lucien

Thank you, Paul, for setting up this site. Our hearts and thoughts go out to you and to Lucien's whole family. Many fond memories have come to mind as I've tried to gather my thoughts and to share them. Dr. Stark was my teacher for the MM program at Peabody 1966-67, and I continued to study with him for one year after that. We never lost contact with each other. I returned to Nashville for visits several times, and when he moved to Lexington, I continued to see him occasionally because my parents lived near there. After I moved to California in 1970, he also travelled to this area to see family and friends. My husband and I felt so honored when he was able to attend our wedding. I think he had the ability to be the perfect teacher for hundreds of students over the years, all of us with our own sets of problems that needed to be fixed. He certainly was that for me. He gently, but persistently, challenged me in so many ways, from the recital program which he chose for me, to his countless suggestions about pianistic and musical details. He expected our best attempts at perfection. To summarize: he imparted many innovative concepts and gave me very specific technical means to achieve very specific musical goals. His verbal explanations were always completely clear, but how lucky we all were to have his words come to life with his playing! As someone else mentioned, there were no extraneous theatrics--just beautiful pianism. I have made accompanying my life's work, and even though I haven't touched the solo piano repertoire for decades, I have tried to keep his words and demonstrations close to my heart and fingers. When someone mentions something in my playing that I know he is responsible for, I still quietly thank him. Lucien was a fabulous package deal: beautiful man, wonderful person, gorgeous pianist. I have great love and eternal gratitude for my association with him, both musical and personal. --Carol Roberts
