class act

Dr. Stark was my piano teacher from 1977-1982 at the Univ. of Ky. He was very patient with me over the years and inspired me to daily practice hours in the U.K. practice rooms. I continue to practice hours daily and for me, it is just plain fun. Dr. Stark was not too thrilled about my becoming an organist, but I use that wonderful technique he taught me every time I play the organ and especially when I play the fabulous Mason Hamlin piano at my church. Lucien certainly was a class act. He wasn't a man of many words, yet what he did say tended to be profound. I will never forget the honesty of this man when asked how his summer of 1979 was. He responded that he had spent several weeks at Charter Ridge, was an alcoholic and was going to AA. I had no idea he was dealing with the demon called alcoholism. Only a classy man would come to the weekly lessons with no signs of alcoholism. He never allowed his alcoholism to effect his job. To this day, I continue to think of him as a supreme model for all alcoholics: be honest with friends and family about your alcoholism. The Kentucky Bach Choir will be performing the Brahms Requiem this fall. I hope to be playing one of the piano accompaniments. I dedicate my performance to Lucien P. Stark, a man who passionately loved the music of Johannes Brahms. Tina Boyd Wagoner
